Just a single game for the Golden Rockets over the past weekend, as the club journeyed south for a late Sunday afternoon matchup with the Fernie Ghostriders.
From the initial face-off, Golden pounced on their divisional rivals, outshooting Fernie by a wide margin in the opening frame, moving into a solid 3-0 lead. Jackson Gair got things going six minutes in, while Brandon Spilchen and Justin Mol added singletons late in the period. Ben Holden and Brett Krawchuk each collected a pair of assists, with Chaz Jaeb also contributing after setting up the opening tally.
The Rockets extended the margin at 5:21 of the middle stanza with a Chase Pilling marker from Brayden Bissell and Chaz Jaeb. Fernie replied a short time afterwards as Danil Timchuk hit for his first goal of the season.
In the final period, the clubs traded goals. Ghostriders Jaden Piper briefly closed the gap before Brayden Bissell’s power-play tally at 6:57 closed out the scoring.
Final score was 5-2. Golden took five of the fourteen penalties assessed by referees Sean MacLean and Trent Ducharme.
A great test for the Rockets this weekend, with a pair of key contests against two strong offensive squads. Friday night, the Kicking Horse crew will be in Creston to tangle with the ThunderCats, returning to home-ice Saturday evening to match skills with the visiting Princeton Posse.
