Rockets vs Chase January 21st, 2012
Saturday evening in Golden, and action at the Rec Centre saw the visiting Chase Heat travel to town to take on the Rockets. The arrival of Chase was a bit of a homecoming for Heat coach Brad Fox, who once guided the local stars behind the bench as the Golden Extreme.
This contest began in a wide-open format, with both teams utilizing the entire ice surface to generate many scoring chances. Both netminders (Golden's Jarrod Schamerhorn and Chase's Jacob Mattes) made several outstanding saves, with Jacob doing most of the work, as Golden outshot their rivals 14-5. The lone tally of the opening period came on a Rocket powerplay at 19:08, with Darren Andre finishing off a play from Kyle Garcia and Brad Orr.
In the middle frame just a single goal again, as the Rockets moved into a 2-0 lead at 7:54 when Aiden Nisse and Bryden Marsh combined to set up Jacob Bergeron in the slot.
In the final period, play opened up dramatically, as a total of five goals hit the twine. Rockets dominated offensively striking first at 1:50 as Carson George made no mistake after taking a feed from Lane Erickson. At 7:35, Jacob Bergeron hit for his second of the contest, assisted by Connor Beauchemin and, at 15:57 the pair combined yet again, this time Connor pulling the trigger to run the score to 5-0.  Less than one minute later, Heat's leading scorer Kevin Leschuk finally solved Jarrod Schamerhorn in the Rocket's net to get his club on the scoreboard. The Goldenites hit for a final marker with just :46 seconds left in regulation. This goal was a picture-perfect three-way passing play from Lane Erickson to Carson George to Dallas Flockhart, who hit for his 6th of the season to put a cap on a 6-1 victory.
The Rockets offensive attack was damaging in this game, but the play of the defensive corps of the Rockets was nearly perfect. Led by the outstanding play of Shane Rutherford, Michael Anderson and Brett Hanna, the Chase forwards were shutdown time-and-again on their rushes into the Rockets zone. One of the best games of the season for all of the Rocket rearguards.
