Rockets vs Kimberley January 17th, 2012
This just may be the best all-around effort from the Rockets this season. The frigid temperatures kept the hometown crowd numbers low, but those who were at the Rec Centre for this contest witnessed a solid sixty minutes of hockey from their local heroes.
The Goldenites came out strong in this one right from the opening faceoff. First period tallies by Connor Beauchemin, Dallas Flockhart and Keith Wake opened up a good 3-0 lead after twenty minutes. The Rockets had a good solid offensive attack, coupled with strong defensive play in the neutral zone, which stymied virtually all of the Dynamiters rushes.
The visitors came out firing on all cylinders in the second period, and had the Rockets hemmed into their own end in the early going. Rockets ran into a little bit of penalty trouble and, behind the outstanding netminding of Jarrod Schamerhorn turned away all of the Kimberley powerplays but one. Rylan Duley hit for the Nitros with the only goal of the middle frame.
In the final period, after Jacob Bergeron had restored the 3-goal lead (finishing off a play with Connor Beauchemin) the Rockets went on the powerplay. In perhaps one of the only "hiccups" of their game, they gave up a shorthanded tally to Taylor McDowell. But the Rockets were not to be denied on this night, as the offense again caught fire and, with an empty net goal from Keith Wake, sealed the 5-2 victory in decisive fashion.
